Lane Cove Tunnel NSW
|
 |
Working with our
client United Group Infrastructure
(Formerly Alstom) DesignFire were
involved with the detailed design of the
tunnel fire protection systems. Lane
Cove tunnel comprises two bored tunnels
between the M2 and Gore Hill freeway in
New South Wales. The two bored tunnel
carriageways are 3.6km long. Between
each tube is an emergency exit cross
passage linking each tunnel. Several
other support buildings provide
ventilation, power and support services.
The risk of a serious fire in the road
tunnels could escalate to a possible
major disaster. Therefore several
measures are taken to provide control,
escape and communication. Whilst
memories of the Mont Blanc tunnel fire
in 1999 still haunt tunnel designers, at
least in Australia we can be reassured
that the authorities concerned expect
the best fire protection systems
available.
The tunnel carriageways have been
provided with multiple fire sprinkler
deluge systems. These systems are made
up of several zones of open nozzle
sprinklers. Each zone is approximately
30 metres long for the full width of the
tunnel. The deluge system can be
operated by the tunnel control staff
remotely via the fire detection and
control system. Information received via
the control system and CCTV cameras give
the emergency response personnel much
needed information. Linear heat
detection within each zone provides the
early warning of a fire event. Failure
to take any action results in the
automatic discharge of the deluge
systems at the fie location.
At 120 metre intervals, a cross passage
houses much of the deluge system
hardware, including the fire detection
controls and equipment. A combined main
provides water supply for the deluge
systems along with regularly placed fire
hydrants in each carriageway. The entire
system is networked via a fibre optic
cable system which interconnects, switch
rooms, sub stations, support buildings
and the central control building.
DesignFire were heavily involved,
supporting the engineering staff at
United, providing essential expertise
where it mattered in the following
disciplines:
Deluge, pumps, hydrants, extinguishers,
smoke detection, linear heat detection,
networked systems, smoke control,
warning systems, and interfacing to the
tunnel control and monitoring systems. |

Chatswood to Epping Rail Tunnels NSW.
|
 |
Providing detailed
hydrant, gaseous extinguishing and
detection systems design we were engaged
by United Group rail, to produce all
necessary documents for the installation
of an extensive fire protection system
through the rail tunnels.
Fire detection provided at each section
of tunnel monitors the air quality going
in and out.. Multiple networked fire
detection systems report to the control
room.
Similarly to the Lane Cove Tunnel there
are several cross passages between each
rail tunnel spaced at 120m apart. Since
the tunnel is approximately 13km long, a
total of 33 cross passages have been
provided. FM200 extinguishing systems
are provided at each cross passage
electrical switch room. Each system is
networked via a fibre optic network. We
believe this is one of the longest fire
detection systems in Australia.
Fire fighting equipment is provided by
hydrants throughout the tunnels and
stations extinguishers in the stations
and FM200 gaseous extinguishing systems
in communications, switchrooms and
essential support areas.
DesignFire provided all the detailed
design information of these systems to
enable installation by the United group. |

Eastlink Tunnel VIC
|
 |
Another
road tunnel. This time its 1.6km long,
connecting the freeway network around
Melbourne. No surprise that DesignFire
are involved in the provision of the
fire protection design which included
deluge, hydrant, detection, gas
detection, foam systems and
communications interfacing to the tunnel
control system. |
| |
Johnsons Hill Tunnel NZ
|
|
This
project is very similar to Lane Cove and
Eastlink tunnels except it’s a lot
smaller. With two bored tubes, each 345m
long its certainly the smallest. However
we also have to consider the seismic
activity in the region so any design of
piping, valves or support systems must
take account of possible earthquakes.
Fibre optic heat detection operates the
deluge sprinkler systems. |
| |
Birla Nifty Mine Site WA
|
|
DesignFire provided
design and support for the complete fire
services at the Birla Nifty mine site.
Our design included a new underground
hydrant main, hose reels, extinguishers
and fire pumps. Switch rooms and support
buildings also included fire detection
and alarm systems networked via the site
fibre communications systems. |
| |
BP Petroleum Refinery Kwinana WA
|
|
Perhaps one of the
most difficult, hazardous, and for fire
professionals, the most interesting
sites, DesignFire have been involved in
various projects throughout the years at
the Kwinana site. In conjunction with
Worley and others we have been designing
fire protection systems for many process
plants and applications.
Comprehensive fire detection measures
involve the most intelligent and
reliable systems. Gas detection is
strategically located to detect early
presence of a possible material escape.
Strategically placed perimeter or point
detection is selected to suit the
process and geography. Numerous gas
types including Hydogen Sulphide,
Hydrogen, Methane present various
challenges in detection.
Infra red Flame detection is a another
way to monitor the plant area. Located
to provide general protection in the
majority of the process plants, a quick
response is assured should an emergency
event occur.
Signals are repeated via the plant DCS
to the duty operators in the control
room, who can initiate emergency
response crews, activate deluge systems,
fire water monitors and control the
plant processes.
Pressure vessels, process plants and the
like are provided with Deluge systems,
either manual or automatic systems to
suit the risk. fire water monitors have
also been provided. |
| |
New Metrorail Tunnels WA
|
|
Fire detection is
provided throughout the tunnels
utilising fibre optic linear heat
detection systems. These provide fire
alarms for the tunnels, but, also assist
the ventilation systems to maintain
stable temperature in the tunnels during
peak times. A graphic display in the
station masters office provides up to
date temperature information throughout
the tunnel networks.
Networked fire alarm systems between
stations and support buildings interface
to the tunnel control system.
Fire fighting is provided by fire pumps
which feed hydrants throughout the
tunnels at every 120 metres. FM200
gaseous extinguishing systems are
provided in communications, switch rooms
and essential support areas. DesignFire
provided all the detailed design
information of these systems to enable
installation. |
